UPDATED MONDAY 11.40am*
FIREFIGHTERS using cutting gear freed a man from his car following an accident at Beaper Shute, near Brading, this evening (Sunday).

Emergency services were called to Beaper Shute — a notorious accident back spot — just before 8pm.

They received a report a man was trapped in his car after it left the road and ended up in a ditch.

No other vehicles were involved.

Two crews from Ryde Community Fire Station were called to the scene and, due to the position of the car, spent almost an hour using cutting gear to free the man.

An ambulance was called at 8pm, but were unable to take the casualty - aged between 20 and 30 years - to St Mary's Hospital, Newport, until 9.30pm, immediately after he had been cut free from the vehicle.

The casualty was taken to the hospital's accident and emergency department. The seriousness of his condition is not known, a spokesman for the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service said.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service returned to base at 9.19pm.

Police enforced a road closure, with traffic diverted via Nettlestone or Ashey.

* The man is in a stable condition and remains at St Mary's, a hospital spokesperson said this morning (Monday). He suffered head and back injuries.
