David Baggott.
THE man who died following a car accident in Newport has been locally named as former Totland Parish Council clerk David Baggott — one of the founders of Totland Regeneration Partnership.
Mr Baggott, from Freshwater, was pronounced dead after the accident in Holyrood Street on Monday afternoon.
The crash occurred at about 1.10pm on Monday, when a Fiat, driven by Mr Baggott, collided with a stationary Vauxhall Omega near the junction with Crocker Street.
The road remained closed for more than one-and-a-half hours. No-one else was injured.
Police said Mr Baggott, who was in his 70s, was given medical treatment at the scene and taken to St Mary's Hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead.
They thanked members of the public who tried in vain to help him.
Officers said they would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or the Fiat being driven prior to the accident.
PC Hannah Pothecary said: "I would like to thank all of the members of the public who tried to help the gentleman, attempted first aid and assisted with controlling the traffic before we arrived.
"After investigating the circumstances of the incident, we do not believe he died as a result of the crash but rather the crash was the result of a medical episode at the wheel."
Island coroner John Matthews confirmed a post mortem showed Mr Baggott died from natural causes and there would be no inquest.
Anyone with information can contact PC Pothecary at Newport Police Station on 101.
