A DETERMINED transplant patient skied in sub-zero temperatures for nearly eight hours to raise funds for a new cancer facility.
John Despard, 46, who has twice undergone transplant operations after being diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma six years ago, took part the Marcialonga 70km world cross-country ski race, in Italy at the end of January.
John, of Mill Hill Road, Cowes, joined around 6,000 competitors in the event, which is part of the World Cup Tour de Ski, although non professionals can take part.
He trained for six months, mostly in the gym and cycling, plus a few days on the slopes before the event and although he ached for several days after, it was all worthwhile.
"I thought it was time I did something to help other people so I was chuffed to bits to finish the race but my legs were killing me and I was absolutely shattered," said John, who finished in 7hrs 21mins.
So far, John has raised about £3,350 in aid of the Red and White appeal, which is raising money for a new cancer wing at Southampton General Hospital, where he had his two operations.
"The money will go towards extending the haematology department, to have more beds, more space and better facilities for transplant patients," said John, who is a director of Wight Coast and County Cottages, Bembridge.
Anyone wishing to donate to the Red and White appeal can still do so at www.justgiving.com/john-despard.
