Mark King joins Fight for the Wight

Sunday, April 17, 2016 - 8:00

FIGHT for the Wight has struck a chord with rock star Mark King.
The Level 42 frontman has urged Isle of Wight residents to back the campaign after publicly pledging his support this week.
Islander Mark, 57, signed the petition after the campaign was launched in March, calling on the government to give the Island more money towards vital services.
He now hopes others will join him.
Mark said: "I’m a huge supporter of the campaign and it really is down to the good people of the Isle of Wight to get behind this. That’s the way it’ll be the most effective.
"If we don’t do something, we will have real problems.
"I urge everyone to look at the Fight for the Wight website because until you see the figures presented in front of you, you really have no idea how wide ranging these cuts are.
"There are really serious issues here, including around care and care in the community.
"I’m a patron of Beaulieu House respite centre and I know how important these sorts of places are for Island families.
"It’s a defining thing of where humanity is at in 2016. We’re supposed to be looking after vulnerable people but if we’re shutting things down, we’re only moving backwards."
The Fight for the Wight petition will be handed to government minister Greg Clark when he visits the Island in the coming months.
