AN ISLE of Wight youngster topped the charts as the best at maths in the UK during the online Mathletics challenge.

Theo Graham, nine, was placed first in the UK and tenth in world on the live leader board during March.

The Bay CE Primary School student’s mathematics skills saw him fend off competition from millions of children across the world.

He was presented with a certificate for his achievements.

Mathletics is an online hub for maths challenges. Students take 20 questions based on their age group’s abilities and curriculum.

Each child competes with one other student to see who can answer the questions correctly first.

The children can challenge students from all over the world.

Each correct question earns the children points. Those with the highest scores appear on the leader board, which is constantly updated.

Those who break into the top ten in the world receive a certificate.

Theo said: "I really enjoy doing maths on Mathletics so I was happy, excited and proud when I found out I was first in Great Britain and tenth in the world."

Jan Wilson, intervention support assistant at the school, said: "It helps the children practise their maths day-in, day-out, week-on-week.

"It raises the profile of maths and children have fun doing it."
