Chesterfield 0 - Fulham 2.

Fulham entertain local rivals Millwall tomorrow just days after strengthening their promotion chances with a victory over Chesterfield.

Chesterfield are a very big team but Fulham proved to their very loyal following that they can mix it with the most physical of sides.

The first goal came five minutes into the second half from Simon Morgan.

Morgan, who has been out with a bad knee injury since November, scored from close range following poor marking from a Paul Trollope corner.

The new strike partnership of Paul Peschisolido and Tony Thorpe (the two smallest players on view ) proved more than a handful against a towering home defence.

Penalty

After a very well-timed run Thorpe was up-ended by goalkeeper Billy Mercer, earning Fulham a penalty.

Although Mark Blake's strike was saved by Mercer, Blake gratefully accepted the rebound to slot the ball home.

Record signing Chris Coleman was outstanding at the heart of the Fulham defence.

And there were some most impressive performances from both Trollope and Paul Bracewell.

On the evidence of this display Fulham will take some stopping as they move into a comfortable play-off position, although automatic promotion remains an unlikely proposition.

Fulham have signed two Battersea youngsters Sean David and Luke Cornwall on professional terms.
