ROADS that melted across the Isle of Wight in hot weather this year will be repaired in the coming weeks.
During hot weather in May and July several roads that had been surface dressed by contracters Kiely Brothers became sticky, leading to long delays, closures and frustration for drivers.
The Isle of Wight Council announced today (Tuesday) that repairs were due to start in the next two weeks.
A spokesman said: "As part of the repair programme, the binding material will be stripped off using high-pressured water jets.
"No closures will be required during the works, although there will be some delays on roads where the repairs are being carried out."
Peter Hayward, Isle of Wight Council manager for highways and transport, said: "The council and its contractors have worked closely together to investigate why we had these problems with some roads during the hot weather conditions.
"We delayed the remedial work to avoid conflicting with the heavier traffic flows during the summer season.
"Kiely Brothers has accepted liability for the material failure and will be carrying out the repair work at their own expense. Again we apologise for the disruption caused when these problems arose."
The council said eight roads had been prioritised for repairs, which should be completed by the end of October.
The roads that will be repaired are Sandown Road in Newport, Cowes Road/Newport Road from Horsebridge Hill to Northwood, Briddlesford Road, Brading Downs Road, Quarr Hill, Sandown Road in Bembridge, Bowcombe Road in Shorwell and Newport Road at Hale Common.
The roadworkâs section of www.iwight.com will be updated when specific dates for repairs are confirmed.
A council spokesman said today (Thursday) that further work could be needed on some stretches of road.
*The spokesman said: "Where we have problems with surface stripping or rutting and this hydro-blasting treatment is in itself insufficient to restore the required quality of road surface, additional work including planing and patching will be undertaken."
