Memories of former hospital flood back

The Royal Isle of Wight County Hospital Nurses Reunion at Lakeside.

THIRTY former nurses who trained and worked at the Royal Isle of Wight County Hospital, Ryde, in the 1960s met up for a reunion at the Lakeside Hotel, Wootton.

The nurses, some of whom had not met for 50 years, were at the now closed hospital between 1960 and 1965. One former nurse, Sue Maren (nee Spencer) travelled to the Island from the United States to be at the reunion.

The get-together was the brainchild of Gini Gully (nee Jordan) and three other former nurses, who hatched the idea in early 2013 when they met up for coffee.

Serious planning for the event began in December last year and they managed to get responses from 40 former nurses, although some were not able to attend on the day.

Gini said: "The event was an opportunity to reflect on the demanding three years of training in those days, under the strict regime of Matron Martin. It prepared them for their future nursing career across the world, as well as on the Island.

"The exchange of experiences during training and after made the hours at the reunion pass quickly and friendships were renewed."
