ENFIELD Council's proposal to discontinue the supply of black plastic bags for rubbish seems to be the ultimate in scrimping.

What was the cost of replacing perfectly adequate kerbside barriers, in Ponders End, by more elaborate cast-iron structures (made in Scotland) and the numerous posts with hanging baskets and their frequent watering, not to mention the unnecessary Christmas decorations around the lampposts?

I should be surprised if the cost of all this was less than the proposed savings on plastic bags for the whole borough.

Since the bags were first introduced to eliminate the emptying and replacement of dustbins does this now mean we can once again put out the rubbish in bins? Or are the streets going to become even more littered by an ill assortment of unsuitable containers?
