POLICE on the Isle of Wight are continuing to search for a 50-year-old man, after he went missing on Friday.
Taxi driver Michael Hawkewell, of Scarrots Lane, Newport, was last seen by a family member on Friday at 7.45pm at the Red Jet ferry terminal in Cowes.
A police helicopter and a dog team were used on Friday evening to search an area in Gurnard, following advice from the man's family. However, their efforts to locate Mr Hawkewell were unsuccessful.
The police were investigating the possibility of Mr Hawkewell being on the mainland.
He is described as:
- Slim Build
- Short, brown, balding hair
- 5ft 7
He was last seen wearing:
- A denim jacket
- A dark-coloured T-shirt
- Black Trainers
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Mr Hawkewell is asked to contact the West Wight Targeted Team on 101.
Police said yesterday (Tuesday) they were becoming increasingly concerned about Mr Hawkewell, who remains missing.
They have released a fresh photograph taken from the CCTV footage at the Co-op store in Cowes on Friday afternoon.
Insp Andrew MacDonald, of the Newport Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: "We are becoming increasingly concerned for Mr Hawkewell’s welfare and want to hear from anyone who has seen him or knows where he might be. We would also appeal directly to Mr Hawkewell to contact us to let us know he is safe and well."
*Police initially said the Co-op sighting was on Saturday, however they have now confirmed it was on Friday.
A relative said Mr Hawkewell was seen by a family member on Friday night and was then taken by taxi from the Red Jet pontoon to Gurnard.
Police have spoken to the taxi driver.
