Following their disappointing 3-2 defeat the previous week at against the Premier League champions at Old Trafford, Chelsea were resolute in their approach. Dennis Wise, making his 400th appearance for the Blues, was not at the heart of matters, but he was not required to be at his best.

Gianluca Vialli's side made the perfect start when Roberto Di Matteo sent George Weah through. The Liberian striker beat the offside trap and put his shot past keeper Sander Westerveld inside the far post.

The opening exchanges were competitive but, crucially, Chelsea held firm.

Chelsea's spirit, or the lack of it, had been in question. But on this occasion, they showed plenty of heart and duly increased their advantage after 14 minutes. Roberto Di Matteo who has been a peripheral figure this season, was to take centre stage.

Weah turned provider as he picked out the unmarked Di Matteo who calmly slotted home his chance.

Liverpool, who are in pole position to secure one of the automatic Champions League berths, rarely threatened the Chelsea goal. The balance of play in terms of possession was clearly with the Blues.

After the break the visitors made a greater impression as they tried to get back into the game. Liverpool enjoyed a greater share of the ball but were unable to create goalscoring chances. The Merseysiders brought on both Titi Camara and Robbie Fowler to bolster their attack. To nullify the threat Chelsea brought on the reliable central defender Emerson Thome.

With two matches remaining it is mathematically possiblefor the Blues to finish second or third. But, realistically, Chelsea will most likely end the season fifth. However, they have the chance to put a dent in Arsenal's hopes when they travel to Highbury on Saturday. Chelsea's final match of the season will be at home to Derby on May 14.
