THE second wartime pipe mine at BAE Systems at Cowes is to be blown-up over the weekend of June 30-July 1.
An operation on May 19-20 successfully removed one of the pipe mines, but the unexpected size and depth of the second mine meant further work was required before it could be exploded.
Following completion of this work, and after consultation with the police and Isle of Wight Council experts gave the go-ahead to the second controlled explosion.
Police will impose a 200 metre safety cordon for two nine hour periods between 11pm on Friday June 29 and 8am the next day and 11pm on the Saturday to 8am on Sunday which will mean local road closures.
The mines need to be removed so that the German Aldi store group can build a supermarket.
