THEY may not have won the Premiership this season but Spurs fans were celebrating this week after their team won an award for its excellent ground facilities.

The Lily Whites of White Hart Lane have been awarded first prize in the Access All Areas competition, set up by the council to find the most accessible public buildings for disabled people.

The ground came top out of 32 entries, all nominated by residents of Haringey.

Adjudicators judged premises on access for the elderly, disabled, deaf and blind as well as the attitude of staff.

The stadium was even put through a rigorous test by one judge, Richard Bullard, in his wheelchair.

He even found the bar was accessible.

Presenting the award to David Pleat, Spurs Director of Football, Mayor of Haringey Cllr Maureen Dewar said: 'I am proud to present this plaque, which was designed by local disabled people, to the most accessible establishment in the borough.

'We are all impressed by the tremendous facilities you offer to all disabled people. Today is definitely a step in the right direction.

'If local business takes a bit more time in their planning, it would make things a lot easier for people with disabilities.

'The key is to raise awareness in all areas of society.'

The competition was sponsored by the Haringey Independent.
