ANDREW Turner MP has apologised after a constituent discovered he claimed twice for £162.04 with the same receipt.

The receipt for carpet cleaner and sundry items was entered in 2006 and 2007 and was spotted by a Wootton resident who contacted Mr Turner’s office on Friday.

Mr Turner said he would investigate how the matter occurred and had written a cheque to the parliamentary fees office to repay the cash.

"I have always adopted the standard business practices in supporting all claims with evidence of expenditure, although the rules were very lax and up to £250 could be claimed without any evidence at all" he said.

"Without the receipts being available this would never have come to light.

"I am very embarrassed at this mistake an apologise for the error."

A second error, which saw a Chamber of Commerce invoice submitted twice in 2005, was spotted by Mr Turner’s internal procedures and dealt with at the time, he said.
