'Much has been achieved' — Ofsted praise for Medina College

Tuesday, February 14, 2017 - 15:53

INSPECTORS have praised school leaders at Medina College for improvement efforts.
The Isle of Wight school was deemed to *require improvement in March 2015, but following their latest monitoring visit to the school, in January, Ofsted said senior leaders and governors were taking effective action to raise standards.
A greater culture of openness and collaboration, improved feedback, support for vulnerable students and efforts to improve behaviour under headteacher Karen Begley were all highlighted in the report, published this week.
Inspectors also commended the work done to stock the library with more books and involve the new librarian in helping raise literacy standards.
Executive headteacher Peter Shaw, who is also responsible for Carisbrooke College and the Island Innovation VI Form, was said to have been instrumental in the improvements.
"His determined, personable and effective leadership has promoted much greater collaboration between staff at Carisbrooke and Medina Colleges and he has sensibly welcomed support by Hampshire local authority advisers.
"Much has been achieved in the first four months of this new leadership arrangement," Ofsted said.
More work needed to be done on evaluating pupil progress and attendance for disadvantaged students, the report added.
*It was initially reported, incorrectly, that Medina College had been placed in Special Measures in 2015. This was not the case.
