A PENSIONER serving a life sentence for brutally beating an Isle of Wight entertainer to death has died of cancer.

An inquest into the death of William Heywood, held yesterday (Wednesday) at Winchester Coroner's Court, found the HMP Winchester prisoner died of natural causes.

Mr Heywood, 70, formerly of Sandham Gardens Sandown, was convicted in June, 2010, for the murder of Richard Ball, 57.

A jury at Winchester Crown Court heard he smashed Mr Ball, of Fairview Crescent, Sandown, over the head with a scaffold pole because the country and western singer was having an affair with his girlfriend.
