Scores of family, friends, colleagues and constituents turned out in force to bid a final farewell to one of Hertsmere's longest-serving councillors Jim Kentish.

Tributes were paid to the former borough Mayor when his funeral service was held at Borehamwood's All Saints Church in Shenley Road, packed with mourners on Monday.

Mr Kentish, who had served as a borough councillor since Hertsmere was first established, died, aged 67, only days before one of his daughters was due to be married.

Mr Kentish, who was diagnosed as having cancer earlier in the year, lost his final battle on December 15 at his Borehamwood home surrounded by his wife Jean, and five children.

All Saints vicar, Rev Margaret Partridge, led the service which paid tribute to the Hillside ward councillor described as a selfless individual, who with his wife had helped care for nearly 200 foster children during their 40-year marriage.

"When Jean was awarded her MBE, she told the Queen half of it belonged to Jim," she said. "He was at heart a fun-loving person -- this spirit of fun remained with Jim throughout his illness. He lived the last few months as fully as possible with great courage and determination."

Paying tribute, Hertsmere Borough Council's chief executive Philip Copland said: "His approach to the role of councillor was one of diplomacy and true determination. He was totally selfless, putting the needs of others first and argued often most persuasively on their behalf.

"He was a true gentleman, he was also someone who enriched the community with his own special personality and character."

Hertsmere council leader Councillor Bryan Stanley, also paid tribute to his Labour colleague and friend of 30 years.

"He wanted to make life better for as many as possible -- that's why he was a councillor. He devoted his life to help other people, that's why Jean and Jim fostered so many fortunate children," he said.

"He strongly campaigned for better facilities in the town. Many people had moved in from London and other places. Jim was one of those leading the campaign for better facilities like the swimming pool and the civic hall."

Mr Kentish, who was an original member of Hertsmere Borough Council since being formed in 1973 and before that was a member of the Elstree and Borehamwood Rural District Council and the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council, served as a town mayor in the early 70s, went on to be borough mayor in 1994.
