THE Solent Coastguard helicopter was scrambled on Christmas Eve, after a pile of clothes was found at Culver Cliff.

Police were alerted by a member of the public, who spotted the clothes at around 4pm.

Fearing someone may have fallen from the cliffs, police called the coastguard and a helicopter was brought in to search the area. Sandown and Shanklin Inshore Rescue, the Bembridge Lifeboat, the Bembridge Coastguard Rescue Team and the initial response team from Ryde were all involved.

Despite an extensive search along the coastline from Forelands to Sandown Pier, nothing was found.

Solent Coastguard watch officer Matthew Kenney said the pile of clothes remained a mystery.
