A DAMP Sunday afternoon was brightened up by the return of vocalist Nette Robinson and sax man Tony Woods to the opening concert of 2018 for Newport Jazz Club.

Those with long memories will recall Nette living and gigging on the Island some years ago and return visits are well supported by her loyal following.

Nette got off to a rousing start with the Billy Strayhorn number "Take the A train" which became the signature tune of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. There were further dips into the Ellington songbook as well as a couple of numbers from some time Miles Davis pianist Bill Evans. Modern composers were not overlooked with a version of Diana Krall's "Maybe you'll be there" and there was a final treat as Nette combined vocals with a rare foray into playing baritone sax. A very good start to what looks, judging by their programme, to be a very good season of concerts.

Back line support was supplied by the Phoenix Modern Jazz Trio comprising Peter Trueman (piano), Mike Whitehead (bass) and Bill Wills (drums).

The next concert will be on Sunday 11th February 2018 when the club welcomes the return of the David Newton Trio. Tickets are available from Gerry Cullis on 730601 or Bill Wills on 523879.
