Women who live and work in the borough are being encouraged to celebrate the role of women on International Women's Day at the Braithwaite Hall, on Friday, March 8.

The day, which is marked by women's groups across the world, aims to highlight and honour the determination of women to achieve equality in society.

Through a programme of events, representatives from both the council and voluntary sector will raise awareness and promote issues which are important to women from a range of diverse backgrounds.

Events include live performances of poetry reading, singing, aromatherapy and life strategies.

Advice and information from local agencies, including the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre, will also be avilable.

Croydon cabinet member for equalities, Councillor Mary Walker, supports the event.

She said. "The day will focus on what has been achieved by women in the ongoing effort to gain equal status in society, to celebrate acts of courage and determination and to highlight areas where positive change is still required."

The day will commence at 10am. For further information, contact Rita Rupal on 020 8686 4433 ext 2002.
