A CHARITY supporting elderly and vulnerable people has opened a new branch on the Isle of Wight.

Smart Living is part of the Hampshire based care and support charity, YOU and has opened an office in Pyle Street, Newport.

The aim of Smart Living is to help people live independently and as safely as possible through the use of technology.

Smart Living provides a free assessment, which involves a home or organisation visit to discuss what people need assistance with.

Technology advisor, Jay Tuck, said: "The technology we use and how it is used varies a great deal, and we have many types of fall detectors that can alert a family member or a member of a care team that a client has fallen over.

"The user wears a pendent button, connected to a monitoring centre who will speak to the person to find out what is wrong. There are also a wide range of other technologies we provide to help with day-to-day life."

Smart Living has been running in Hampshire for three years and won the Connecting People Award 2011 from IESE (Improvement and Efficiency South East) for supporting people with learning disabilities.
