New digestion plant proposed

By David Newble

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

PLANS to build a new anaerobic digestion plant on land east of Vectis Cottages in Stag Lane, Newport, have been lodged with planning bosses at the Isle of Wight Council.

Anaerobic digestion plants create energy from organic matter, such as manure and plants, by extracting methane gas as a by-product as they decompose.

The applicant for the digestion plant has not yet been named.

The plant would be sited close to a planned biomass plant, which green energy firm, Real Ventures, wants to build in Stag Lane.

The biomass scheme would burn wood and convert it to energy but critics claim it would lead to more carbon dioxide emissions and increased deforestation.

If this article is referencing application TCP/13095/C, P/01378/12 on the council's planning website, then the applicant is named / listed on the available application form (and other documents.) Looks like it's a company called Greenhill Ad.

Kev, just to reinforce my previous post, I am reading an article in todays Daily Telegraph the first sentence of which says:
"John Hayes said that we can “no longer have wind turbines imposed on communities” and added that it “seems extraordinary” they have allowed to spread so much throughout the country."

This is the SAME John Hayes, M.P. and Energy Minister, who was here on the Island 2 weeks ago opening the "Global Summit" organised by David Green and attended by less than 150 people.

Great news for those of us who have fought the imposition of useless wind farms here, but horrendous news for PfR, Infinergy and Vestas and their supporters at Ego Island and the C.P.

Kev wrote "do you think the planners are trying to ease us into having wind turbines?" Absolutely NO CHANCE!
When I spoke at the Wellow hearing on 16 July, it was confirmed that the Core Strategy adopted March 2012, Policy SP6 (Renewables) gave a target of "up to 100Mw installed capacity" of all renewables by 2020.
In Appendix A of the agenda, it listed 16Mw of operational renewables, and gave a further 24Mw that were "permitted, but not yet operational.
Thats a total of 40Mw NONE OF WHICH are from wind!!
If you look at the current planning applications, there are 3 more solar farms awaiting a decision, so we are well over halfway to our target 100Mw.
Factor in this project, the tidal project and the Biomass plant and there will be NO NEED for ANY wind farms here!
Hooray!
Sleep easy Kev.

Kevin, I have a 'digestion plant' in my garden, so have the neighbours either side of me, in fact one neighbour has TWO, however none have chimneys and none collect the Methane they produce as the products decompose, but for the life of me, I cannot see why a chimney would be required to collect said Methane Gas. Maybe it's because I am thick. Therefore can someone please explain where the chimney comes in in collecting Methane from decomposing material?
Thank you.

do you think the planners are trying to ease us into having wind turbines, with the amount of chimneys going up a few windmills wont be seen

Would it not be better to build it at County Hall?

Plenty of hot air comes out of there!

What is this?

Why is the island being turned into a dam massive factory refinery?

Soon we will have massive chimneys blotting our landscape like across the water.
