BLIND golfer James Mar-chant is in a predicament.

The Mottingham player has featured in the News Shopper on several occasions and reached a career-best 11th on the English Blind Golfing Association rankings last year.

Following a short lay-off, Marchant has been accepted for a string of ranking tournaments this year but he cannot afford to play them.

He can no longer works due to his poor eyesight, so funds are tight.

"I haven't played since October," said Marchant. "But I'm dying to play again. I went up to the driving range last week and was hitting a five-iron 180 yards and I feel quite confident I could do something this year."

Marchant, who plays off a handicap of 30, is due to play in the Northern Cup, in Cheshire, the Matchplay Knockout in Burton-on-Trent, and the Chair- man's Cup, in York, before a scheduled trip abroad for the Japanese Open.

Each tournament has an entry fee and with travelling and hotel costs to consider, the total bill can be enormous.

Marchant said he would love to compete in Japan and although the entry and hotel fees come to just £60, the flight is too expensive.
