Croydon Harriers got off to a promising start in the Surrey League Division 2 Cross- Country season on Saturday, racing to third place in their opening day fixture.

John Fitzgerald, was first home for the Harriers, warming up for the forthcoming New York Marathon by making light of the windswept Epsom Downs course to power his way through the 100 plus field to finish an excellent fifth.

The Harriers' Deron Fagin was also celebrating after racing to a career best seventh place while Jon McCallum took 10th spot.

In the veterans' event Mike Dawson was 33rd, Julian Dillow 51st, Dave Warren 53rd, Stan Collie 61st, and Pete Yarlett 72nd. Keith Brown in 90th place snatched the Harriers' last scoring points and was followed home by Andy Denevo, Tony Fitzgerald, and Mike Caudwell.
