RADICAL plans which could make the bottom half of Newport High Street pedestrian access only have been unveiled by highway chiefs.
They are recommending the road be closed for access from the High Street onto Coppins Bridge, diverting traffic away via St James’s Street, Hunnycross Way and Riverway onto Medina Way.
The plan, which will be discussed by cabinet members on Tuesday, has already come under fire from Newport East Councillor, Geoff Lumley, who said similar plans eight years ago met a barrage of opposition from residents, unhappy at the thought of traffic being redirected down their narrow streets. He also claimed there had been a lack of consultation.
The council says the plans are long term to meet future traffic projections.
