New programme to develop community volunteers on the Isle of Wight

A new programme to help people take on an active role in the community on the Isle of Wight.

COMMUNITY Action Isle of Wight, has launched a new mentoring project.

Over the next 12 months, the charity will help 36 people take an active role in their community as a volunteer.

The scheme, which began on February 1, is funded by JobCentre Plus.

It is aimed at people in receipt of benefits who want to move into volunteering and eventual employment but who need a personalised approach to help build their confidence and find the right role.

People taking part will be matched with mentors who will provide encouragement, motivation and support to people who have often faced long term sickness or other barriers to finding a job.

The role requires an ability to establish a rapport with people and inspire them to make progress.

Amy Milford-Wood, the project lead, says: "This is an amazing opportunity for everyone involved. Participants get tailored support to achieve their goals."
