New supermarket plans

THE CO-OPERATIVE supermarket hopes to open a new, larger store on the Isle of Wight.

Southern Co-operative plans to move its Freshwater store from its current location, at Hooke Hill, across the road to Hocknull's Yard and the former West Island Printers site.

Store manager Tony McGuinness said: "We simply don’t have enough space in our current store to meet local demand.

"A new store will give us more space so we can offer a bigger range of products, especially fresh and local food.

"It will ensure we can offer a much better service, including improved parking facilities."

A public consultation event, to present the plans and gather the views of residents, will be held at the West Wight Sports Centre on October 25, 2pm to 8pm and October 26, from 9am to 2pm.

A planning application is due to be submitted following the consultation.

A decision has yet to be made on the future of the Hooke Hill site, which Southern Co-operative owns the freehold for.

If the plans go ahead, Hocknull's coal merchant will be relocated.

Previous plans to build 65 homes on the former West Island Printers site, submitted in 2009, were dropped after fierce opposition from Freshwater Parish Council.

Members objected on a variety of grounds, including overdevelopment of the site, flooding and drainage, traffic issues and the unknown effect on the ecologically sensitive Afton Marsh.

http://www.asdanewportiow.co.uk/ if you go on this website it says a decision should be made by the end of the year. It would be good to see someone giving Tesco a run for their money.

Presumably, the Co-operative will not want the tip to be adjacent to their new supermarket. So, presumably, some sort of deal will be (has been?) done between them and the Isle of Wight Council! So, where, will the tip be moved to? Up on to Golden Hill Park - as mooted way back in 2005 ? The owners of new luxury properties at Golden Hill Fort won't like that! More planning application problems for some residents? Is this something that the proposed Freshwater Neighbourhood Plan would be able to consider?

This is a no brainer. Firstly the junction in the photo FLOODS almost knee deep at times.
Secondly at the weekend the local civic amenity (tip) just up the dead end road from here is packed with cars queued down to this junction so how will shoppers get in and out too?
Thirdly, Co-op in Freshwater has recently been upgraded fitting new entrances and exits, 3 times since it originally opened IIRC? Money wasted which is recouped from the shopper through inflated prices.
I have used the tip here several times and it is a nightmare to get in and out sometimes on to the Afton road?
One thing which annoys me about the current co-op is the morons in cars who pull in to the car park and stop near the entrance to let the wife out as she is clearly too lazy to walk an extra 15 feet from a parking space and this causes traffic congestion all the time as it makes cars stop out on the road, then the next car comes in & does exactly the same thing, so I never bother shopping here.

What happened to the planned building of the ASDA store that we were supposed to be seeing in Newport? Still waiting!
