Youth football: Stolerman shoots Wingate into final

Wingate & Finchley U15, beaten 5-2 and 5-1 by Sudbury Court in the Harrow Youth League this season, got their revenge in splendid style with a thrilling 3-2 extra-time victory in their league cup semi-final clash at Abrahams Stadium on Sunday.

Manager Steve Glynne's pre-match plans to shore up Wingate's defence against the powerful attack of the runaway Second Division champions with four men at the back and five across the midfield paid off handsomely.

Wingate suffered a blow after 16 minutes when key midfielder Richard Blaiberg was concussed in a heading duel and taken to hospital. But goalkeeper Nick Goldberg, who performed heroically, made a magnificent diving save to ensure the first half ended goalless.

Wingate went ahead with a penalty early in the second half when Adam Stolerman was brought down and Steve Gevertz powered in the spot kick.

But two goals in six minutes from David Kilana put Sudbury ahead.

Back came Wingate and Stolerman (69min) forced extra time with a powerful 20-yard volley.

Well on top, Wingate made sure of the club's first appearance in a final for three years when Gevertz delivered a cross and Stolerman blasted home from the edge of the box.

In the final, Wingate will face Division One opposition, either Hayes End Wanderers or FC Roundwood, who meet on Sunday.

Though Mavericks soon grabbed a fine equaliser, Hendon were on top and goals by Nathan Graham and Kevin Knapper gave them victory. The U16s' bid for a perfect league season ended at Northwood when they twice let the lead slip in a 4-4 draw. .

Northwood scored in the opening minute, but Terry Walton and man-of-the-match Michael Crossley put Hendon 2-1 up, and Nathan Edwards made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.

Though Northwood battled back to level, Edwards restored Hendon's lead two minutes from time, only for the home side to force a deserved draw draw in the last minute.

The U17s suffered a disappointing reverse at the hands of Sudbury Court, who they meet in the league cup semi-final on Sunday. Through the 4-0 scoreline flattered Sudbury, the win certainly did not.

Starting slowly, the U18s were second best in the battle for midfield control in the first half of their match with Arlesey Town. Manager Gary Hand made a chance at the interval that helped turn the tide, but Hendon lacked punch and the game ended goalless.

A last-gasp goal by Lee Adams with a shot that took a slight deflection gave Barnet U14 a lucky 1-0 win over Enfield Eagles.

It needed a super headed goal-line clearance by Marco Mori to keep Barnet on terms at the interval, and they could not capitalise on abundant possession until Adams snatched the winner.

The U9s started in fine style against East Herts Blues with a splendid shot from Danny Hart soon followed by a delightful chip by Rik Fijten.

But chances were wasted, and East Herts replied before the break. Then Barnet found their shooting boots with Jeff Edoman (2) and Tom Jones (his first goal for the side) on target with fierce shots, followed by a fine near post header from Max Turner.

Goals by Anthony Mann (2), Daniel Clancy (2) and Justin Coffey gave the U18s a 5-1 league away win over Enfield Spartans, but the U14Bs crashed 16-1 at home to Chalden Youth, Ian Sweeney scoring their consolation goal, and the U12As went down 5-0 away to Enfield FC A.
