Newport store under threat

CAMERA retailer Jessops has gone into administration, with 2,000 jobs including some on the Isle of Wight under threat.

The troubled photographic chain has a shop in St James Street, Newport and just under 200 stores throughout the UK.

The company confirmed today (Wednesday) it was unable to honour gift vouchers or accept returned goods.

Rob Hunt, joint administrator and partner at PwC, said: "Over the last few days the directors, funders and key suppliers have been in discussions as regards additional consensual financial support for the business. However these discussions have not been successful.

"In light of these irreconcilable differences the directors decided to appoint administrators and we were appointed earlier today."

He added: "Our most pressing task is to review the company's financial position and hold discussions with its principal stakeholders to see if the business can be preserved. Trading in the stores is hoped to continue today but is critically dependent on these ongoing discussions.

"However, in the current economic climate it is inevitable that there will be store closures."

The units will stay vacant on The Isle of Wight plus other towns whilst landlords charge ridiculous rents, council business rates are reduced so to attract retailers like other councils have introduced and been successful at. Newport has become a ghost town as far as quality retailers go. Unless the council take action, Islanders will continue to shop on the mainland in greater numbers, holiday makers will use Fast Cat or Hovertravel to go across to Portsmouth to spend their money. Lets hope the council start to take care of the Islanders Trades instead of themselves.

There was news this morning of a possible buyout though so all should be fine. S Jones. I wouldnt worry, you will definitely get your camera back - they are still trading.
Worst case scenario is that they do an overnight close like Peacocks, if your item is still under warranty you can contact the manufacturer. They will always return your goods as the Administrators can't keep anything that isn't the companies. The only thing that could be affected really is online orders that haven't been fulfilled.

@ S Jones: All I can suggest is that you go into the store and make enquiries. I would have thought that as the camera belongs to you and is your property they would have to ensure safe return. But then again, I'm no legal expert.

Anyone know what happens to goods they have of yours that have been sent of for repair please? A camera of mine was returned the end of December as it was not working correctly and they sent it of to be repaired? It was only brought the end of August so reading this has been a bit upsetting. Any advice?
