Harrow and District Women's BA were back at the Century on Friday when nearly 50 bowlers competed for the Bigwood Trophy, an annual event which raises money for the Benevolent Fund.

Sheila Walkley and Sheila York, both from the Swaleleys Club, together with local bowlers Elsa Key, from Preston Park, and Wembley's Margaret Britain, all shared the trophy.

Preston Park's Hilla Rennardson and Ruby Cockson plus Mary Slyth from Kingsbury were in the rink that came a close second

Looking ahead, as the year 2000 is the Golden Jubilee of the district ladies' association, competition secretary Joyce Cope, together with the rest of the committee, are planning something special in the way of competitions.

Wealdstone and Century continue to compete for honours in various events, with Century managing to come out on top in the Harrow and District Coronation Cup by a single shot, due to the rink skipped by Dennis Hicks finishing six shots ahead. Century champion Dave Robson faces a real test in the area semi-final of the National champion of Champions competition against Roxeth's Middleton Cup bowler Tony Waller.

Also this week the Century man is up against Derek Adams from Wealdstone in the later stages of the County Unbadged Singles.

Following a tremendous battle, Wealdstone's Richard Kirk managed to overcome Tony Sullivan, the budding newcomer at Century, in the county singles and qualifies for the area semi-final with Century's Keith Gentry, although they miss each other in the draw.

The Middlesex League is becoming a two-horse race between Century and Shepherds Bush, with the Wembley-based club keeping up their challenge with a fine win over Ealing's GWR club. Dave Robson, together with Gentry, Roy Whitehead and Peter Wilcock were the outstanding four with a 20-shot advantage, but rinks skipped by Derek Russell and Tony Pope helped consolidate the 31-shot final, margin.

GWR's only consolation was a winning four skipped by D Stanley. Due to serious problems with the weather, Century's friendly match against Edmonton on Sunday was played indoors. The home club scored a massive 61-shot victory for the men, but Edmonton's ladies took the honours by a nine-shot margin.

Middlesex kept their hopes of qualifying for the later stages of the Middleton Cup alive by beating Sussex by 10 shots at Logan Road on Saturday in a rain-affected match.

With local bowler from Roxeth Tony Waller helping John Sweeney of Paddington to a 19-shot rink advantage when the rains came, this set up the final group match against Kent at Beckenham this Saturday which could see Middlesex qualify.
