No concessions on tourist buses

CONCESSIONARY bus fares on the Island’s tourist routes will be stopped next month.

English National Free passes, New Islander Cards and Student Rider passes will not be accepted on the Island Coaster, Needles Breezer, Downs Breezer, Medina Breezer and Sandown Bay Breezer from May 15.

The move follows a change in government guidelines regarding concessionary fares, which will no longer apply to services primarily provided as tourist routes or tours.

Concessionary travel will continue to be funded by the Isle of Wight Council on all other bus services, including travel before 9.30am.

“We note the government’s directive and agree it is not in the public interest to use taxpayers’ money funding concessionary travel on tourist services,” said Cllr Tim Hunter-Henderson, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for environment and transport.
