No to Niton conservation status

NITON will not become a conservation area despite a recommendation by Isle of Wight Council officers.

Planning officers had said the village, which is a historic settlement, would benefit from the protection of conservation area status, which would limit development.

But, in a delegated decision taken yesterday (Wednesday), Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for economy and regulatory services Cllr George Brown has ruled out such a move.

A report issued following the decision said Cllr Brown, deputy leader of the Isle of Wight Council, had taken into account the views of people in the area who felt the extra protection was not needed.

Not sure it makes any difference on the Isle of Wight. Many places are supposedly Conservation Areas but it doesn't stop people installing plastic windows in period buildings and putting up satellite dishes. Where the Council has designated a Conservation Area it does precious little to enforce it so why bother going to the expense of designating it in the first place.
