A STATE-of the art new school will be opened officially next week on the Isle of Wight.

Haylands Primary School moved out of its old building and into the new site opposite the old Swanmore Middle School in Ryde, after the build was finished on-time.

Stef Hopper, headteacher of the primary school said: "Staff and pupils are thrilled to be in such an exceptional new building.

"The school council worked very closely with the architects on the design on areas such as the landscaping and the playground."

The school opened at the start of term, and will be officially opened by Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Maj Gen Martin White at 11am on Wednesday.

The new school has bigger classrooms, a larger sports hall, open-plan spaces and is solar powered. Students will also have access to wireless mobile learning devices such as iPads.

Mr Hopper said: "We are all now looking towards a bright and successful future in our new home where children can grow, thrive and achieve excellence."

Dawn Cousins, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member said: "By the end of the year the Island will also have two more state-of-the-art schools, with Cowes Enterprise College due for completion in November, and the new St Francis Primary in Ventnor due to be finished in December."

What a shame that other children in schools apart from these three, then, are being taught in mobile class rooms ,crammed into not fit for purpose small primaries, or moved into former middle schools where the facilities have been refurbished in the typical council corner cutting, penny pinching fashion! A fact councillor dawn seems conveniently happy to forget. And what happened to the ' improving exam results' promises that the council made at the time of reorganisation? Look at recent ofsted reports and exam results for all th schools on the island and feel sorry for the children.

.....been finished on time, thats because island contractors were used.

I thinks the council should reveal just what the penalty clauses they are imposing on the contractor are as if they were significant as they say they are why would they want that kept out of the public domain?

In the meantime pupils have to suffer substandard facilities given that some mobile classrooms have been removed from the site and then moved back onto the site once it was clear that the new site would not be ready.

hang on....didn't the council say in a previous statement that Cowes Enterprise College's new school WOULD be opened in October!!! now its November.

see the quotes below from the original press release

"Because the move from the adjacent former building to the new facility needs to be done out of term time, the final transfer of equipment and furniture to the new building will be undertaken during the half-term holiday break at the end of OCTOBER"

"The first day pupils will be taught in the new surroundings will be during the first week after the half-term holiday break"

I don't think it will be until January looking at the site in its current state and the council are just in the hands of the contractor totally disgraceful given that other schools have b
