Oil spillage danger on roads

By Suzanne Pert - Friday, November 20, 2009
MOTORISTS were being urged to exercise extra caution on the roads on Friday afternoon after reports the roads between Ryde and Newport had become slippery due to a suspected oil spillage.
One motorist who rang the County Press said the road was so slippery by the Racecourse roundabout that his car had ended up in a hedge.
Peter Hayward, IW Council head of highways and transport said: "We are currently assessing a suspected fuel spillage, stretching along the main road (A3054) from Ryde to Coppins Bridge in Newport, and into Newport town centre.
"It has been reported that the road has become slippery in parts, particularly at the junction by The Cedars in Wootton, and  at St John's Hill, Ryde. I would urge road users to be extra cautious until the incident is dealt with."
