THE OLYMPIC torch arrived on the Isle of Wight this lunchtime (Saturday), carried on board a Wightlink ferry escorted by a flotilla of well-wishers led by Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat.

Decorated with bunting Wightlink's Wight Sky, arrived in Yarmouth shortly before 1pm.

It was met by hundreds of cheering Islanders, Medina Marching Band and children from Yarmouth Primary School.

In an impromptu moment the children were given the chance to see the flame close up by police escorts, before it began its journey to the Needles.

Teacher Paula Blackley described the experience as wonderful, while pupil George Allenden, ten, said: "It was brilliant seeing the flame close up."

In Totland it was estimated a crowd of 8,000 people had gathered to welcome the torch, according to the Isle of Wight Council.

Thousands of people also gathered in Yarmouth Square for the torch's return to the town, where it was handed to 14-year-old wheelchair user Hattie Little.

Hattie, who hopes to represent Great Britain at the 2016 Paralympics, was cheered on by her mum Helen.

Helen said: "I am exceedingly excited and very proud."

Crowds lined the streets of Gunville, Carisbrooke and Newport to watch the torch go by.

Bell ringers at the Minster Church of Sts Thomas, Newport gave a special performance to mark the torch's journey through the town.

Newport High Street was packed, as thousands of people cheered on torch bearers including Sheila Ingram, 74, the oldest of the Isle of Wight torch bearers, who was chosen for her community work.

There were incredible scenes as Island sailing heroine Dame Ellen MacArthur ran the last stage of the Isle of Wight torch relay in East Cowes.

Thousands upon thousands of cheering people lined the streets as she ran waving and smiling at the crowds.

She stopped for photographs with young people and parents in York Avenue, before running the final leg towards the Red Funnel terminal, where she was surrounded by crowds of cheering supporters.

She said: "The most amazing thing was seeing everyone smiling while the torch went through towns and villages.

"It was hugely special and quite moving."

That's in my top three books of all time! For Whom the Bell Tolls is No1, then Cannery Row slides in at No2, but Leech's Guide to Sussex Bonfire Processions is never far from my reach at 3. However, given the fact that Hemingway and Steinbeck have limited connections to Sussex, and are both dead, I throw my weight behind Mr Leech's selection. Incidentally, I am writing a book about insane contributors to local news website forums, so next time the torch is kindled in this neck of the woods I hope to be first in line.

Terry, there you go again using the word "Heroes".
If a retired silver service waitress is a hero, then this man will blow you away- Keith Leech, from Hastings, he is carrying the torch today, let me tell you about him, he has written a book about Sussex Bonfire processions which are a noisy unbroken tradition incorporating large bonfires & fireworks..
His driving force has been a desire to promote English customs using his expertise of Morris Dancing, Mummers Plays, Folk Music, Song & Dance.
All hail Keith Leech, a true "HERO" according to our Terry.

I do not doubt that ours do a good job when pressed BUT they are not "The best in the world"!! And our "great military force" is not so great, cutbacks, lack of equipment, no money to keep them in jobs to protect us with any proposed terrorist attacks, if only there was 9 Billion pound laying around, we could once again, have a Great Britain. Any ideas where 9 Billion quid is being wasted? No?

John, they will not be East End builders, they will be Polish. And most of the G4S guards have been exposed as "Not being able to speak English, have no uniforms, or training". And G4S are getting £248 million for this deal? It is a farce.
But we can rely on the military, as they have, among other things, missile launchers, near to the olympics,, for what reason?
In case an over zealous high jumper tries to leg it into the capital to claim asylum?
A load of people, running round a track, cycling, swimming, and they need missile launchers, jeez, whatever happened to our free country.

Maybe a few new pool attendants in the new swimming pool. A few ticket attendants here and there. Can you imagine that happening this years Jubilee? No, Health & Safety say you need a food licence/insurance to serve food, would need to ask permission to close roads, farmer would do you for trespass, etc etc. Did the Queen pay for any parties? No? WHY? Are we robots, I am surprised they did not have "canned" applause & laughter like old comedy films playing out that bus!

But this is modern day, you say it has done an 8000 mile round trip, if I want to stand out in the rain and see an old flame, I would stalk an ex girlfriend in a thunderstorm, you mention after the olympics they will build on it, how great, if you had kept up to date with the news you would know that there is radioactive waste there from when it was a landfill site and this will be exposed when they redevelop the site as part of the legacy programme. The Bionic mans states the true cost of the games is Billions well I must ask how many jobs it has created and how many jobs it will go on creating and all the new businesses that will relocate to the Olympic site when it has finished!! But as you are jesting about the 6 million Dollar man, may I ask if you know what the olympics are costing? Mllions? No, try 9 Billion UK pounds.
That is NINE BILLION POUNDS!!
Tell me what would be better, that money spent on the olympics, and have nothing but debts afterwards, or getting this country to be "Great" again, as in when it was once known as Great Britain, a time when we were once a powerful nation, strong.. but those days are gone.
You mention "Carnival"?
No, I saw that as no carnival. A carnival is a public street party, not a few locals lining a road watching a someone in a track suit run past with a gas powered flame in their hands and not be allowed to join in, must stay back, or the flames security guards will push you out of the way. Mr Lee Majors! I do believe he was the bionic man at one stage! can you not stop the suicide bombers, Streakers and the proportion in society that are crazy making a point in destroying a wonderful carnival event? @Terry Kirkby A reply to you, no, no speeding ticket, but I found it a waste of Police resources seeing this, what were they all there for, crowd control in case the islanders rioted? Were 5 Police outriders really needed? Plus Officers stood every few feet along the route? If as you say I did need to call someone if a member of my family was attacked, or my car broken into, then there would have been no Police free to come to help as they were all looking after a big cigarette lighter! IMHO there was no need for so many, the big lighter had its own security, there were brightly coloured buses and vehicles travelling slowly with the lighter so there would be no risk of accidents if people used common sense like the old days.
I found it almost laughable that locals were sat in the pouring rain an hour before the flame passed by, just so they could get a good spot! Was this the highlight of their year,or their life?

with regards to the Lee Majors comment I would like to ask if he has recently been given a speeding ticket as his comments about the Police are so bitter to say the least! Who will Mr Major call at 3am in the morning should someone be breaking into his car to raise much needed funds for their drug habit?? Who would Mr Major call if a member of his family was attacked whilst walking home and robbed of monies and valuables??? yes The Police! so in hindsight do take a look at yourself when making derogatory comments and take a moment to think. The Police have a hard enough job as it is and the whole country would be so much safer if we all took a role in helping them with there jobs and not slating them at any given time. The Olympics is great for the UK and by holding it we are showing the World that we are the best and always will be.

I am surprised that there were no collection boxes jogging alongside to help pay for this monstrosity, it is lucky that there were no cars speeding at 31mph on the island today after seeing the heavy police presence in this rolling road block, who would have stopped them! @Tom Taylor you say "Had best time in Totland"? Tell us all what is in Totland? How many shops? Businesses? It is no wonder that you got excited seeing someone with a torch, setting fire to the place would be the best thing since all the shops shut!
