On your bike message of £5.2m tourism plan

A MULTI-MILLION pound tourism investment plan, which could lead to a cycletracks being extended and buses converted to carry surf boards, could be agreed soon.

The Isle of Wight Council announced today that a plan to spend £5.2m — including almost £4m from government and the rest from council budgets — is to be subject to a delegated decision by Cllr Edward Giles.

The plan includes creating transport hubs to provide travel and tourism information, a mobile phone app, marketing, and improving the cycletrack and walking network.

The council said discussions were already underway to buy land to fill the gaps in the existing cycletrack network.

The plan could lead to an off road route from Brading to St Helens being created and the Newport to Sandown route extended.

Bus services for tourists could be improved, including a new direct route from Ryde to Alum Bay and some buses converted to carry surfboards and bikes.

A sustainable travel co-ordinator would be appointed on a fixed term contract until March 2015, working with the new destination management organisation.

The co-ordinator would work with accommodation providers to promote a "walkers and cyclists welcome" initiative to encourage people to make the most of public transport, cycling and walking. Ideas include offering discounted rates and attraction entrance fees.

The walkers and cyclists welcome theme, similar to that used by Visit Scotland, would promote businesses that provide facilities such as drying rooms, cycle racks and packed lunches.

Cllr Giles cannot take the decision before Thursday next week (1).

The report can be viewed on the council's website here.

cycle tracks would be a good idea. But cycle and walker tracks are awful.
I used to love walking my dog along the cycle track from cowes to newport, now it is just like a road with the cyclists, and i do not bother.
Because of deafness i can not hear cyclists bells, so it is a nightmare
for me.
Also look at the cycle tracks on the pavements in town, impossible to
tell a young child the pavement is safe anymore.
They will not be happy until there are no safe green walking places left,
cyclists are not pedestrians nor should they be mixed with them.

sounds a good idea but will it work? look at all the money that was spent on tarmacing the old railway line from Wootton to Newport and yet even with the divertion around the private section, cyclists still use the racecourse and along Fairlee Road.Maybe the money should be spent on purchasing the private section of the track and the enforcing the use of it. Surely to get tourists over in the first place then the price of the ferries should be addressed too. It's all very well sayimg "build it and they will come" but if your planning a family day to the beach or a days bike ride you are not going to spend most of your cash trying to cross the solent or if local trying to get all your beach baggage onto a bus with not enough room on or heaven forbid a helpful member of staff!
To improve tourism to our island we need to spend the money on the dissused artillary ranges that we call roads .Force Wightlink, Red Funnel and to a point Hovertravel to lower the priceds and open the

Reopening public toilets and adding Changing Places Toilets alongside, would I feel benefit a tourism plan and benefit residents at the same time.

I think you'll find it's the abundance of motor vehicles that cause traffic problems, Mike.

Agree with you Jim - it would be great to see more year-round employment on the island.

That's great news for the island. I've wished for a long time that I can take my bike on the bus and now it's set to become a reality.

Martin, cyclists aren't to blame for the traffic. It's too many cars to Newport. It's a nice feeling when it's the festival and I can just whizz past the queues like it's nothing!

Have to agree with Martin. Love to see all cyclists off main roads. The traffic would flow far more freely.

Great news this, more and more of us are now Cycling to and from work. We need more cycletracks.
