A SINGLE arrest is one too many according to a senior police officer who said there was no excuse for drink-driving.
Insp Martin Goodall, of the roads policing unit, said it was difficult to say what was behind an increase in drink-drive arrests on the Isle of Wight this Christmas, but said there was no excuse for people committing the offence.
During the Smashed campaign 19 drivers were arrested, compared to 16 the previous year.
Insp Goodall said: "We always put a significant amount of effort into specific anti drink driving operations at this time of year and may just have found more offenders.
"On the other hand, people may just be refusing to make the responsible choice — and it is a choice — not to drink and drive.
"Whatever the reason, any number of arrests is too many and whether its being done through ignorance or arrogance there's simply no excuse."
