Four youths were arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a dustbin at Borehamwood's Lyndhurst School on Monday night last week.
Police were called after residents spotted the teenagers on the roof of the Gateshead Road middle school at around 11.15pm.
When questioned the boys, aged 13 and 14, from Borehamwood, Shenley and Daventry, denied destroying the £75 bin.
Police said the youths claimed they found the bin alight, and had tried to put it out.
On Tuesday, police had not yet decided whether to charge the boys with any offence.
