Outstanding Ofsted for St Catherine’s

By County Press Reporter - Saturday, November 14, 2009
OFSTED has recognised St Catherine’s School, Ventnor, as "outstanding" for the way it transforms the lives of young people.
Following a two-day intensive Ofsted care inspection in October, St Catherine’s received the accolade for the way it teaches and looks after young people with language and speech disorders.
The inspector noted when talking with the children and young people: "All those spoken with talked in positive terms about their lives at school and special mention was made of the kindness of staff, the opportunities to experience new activities and the enjoyment they had with their friends.
"It is evident the school provides a unique educational experience to a particularly vulnerable group of young people.
"Each young person is treated as an individual with their own social, cultural, educational and health needs. Teaching, residential, nursing, therapeutic and support staff all help young people to meet achievable goals.
"Residential care plays an important role within the school and the well motivated team have created a safe and nurturing environment in which young people can develop a range of social and life skills."
He praised the school for helping young people develop speech, language and life skills to a level where they felt confident enough to engage in society.
Principal Grenville Shipley said: "I recently attended a national specialist schools’ conference where many reported how difficult it is to receive an 'outstanding’ from Ofsted. This is fantastic for St Catherine’s."
Head of care at the school Gloria Grant said: "The rating reflects how everyone in school — children, young people, staff, volunteers, parents and supporters — work as a team for the benefit of our learners."
