Overnight closure on Wightlink route

By a County Press reporter

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

WIGHTLINK will be closing its Fishbourne to Portmouth car ferry route overnight on Saturday, October 13 into Sunday, October 14.

The closure is due to essential link span works at Fishbourne.

The last sailings on the route before the closure will be the 9pm from Portsmouth and the 10pm from Fishbourne. The crossing will re-open with the 6am sailing from Portsmouth and the 7am from Fishbourne.

The company will run additional crossings on its FastCat service for foot passengers during the closure:
From Portsmouth – 11.15pm, 12.15am, 1.45am, 3.15am and 5.15am
From Ryde – 11.45pm, 12.45am, 2.15am, 3.45am and 5.45am

There will also be two extra sailings on the Yarmouth to Lymington car ferry route — the 2am from Lymington and the 2.50am from Yarmouth.

Wightlink apologised for any inconvenience.

Mike .... a Bridge? Dream on
David.........Do you not think you are being a little OTT here? Things do need maintenance. The A34 at the moment has road closures in \Oxfordsire overnight for resurfacing. Can linkspan maintenance be done when it's in fairly constant use. Wightlink has given 4 weeks notice. It's also put additional sailings from Lymington to Yarmouth and is running Fast Cat services through the night. Also if it has to be done I could imagine the Saturday/Sunday overnight is the quietest of the week. I am not a fan of the Company but on this issue I suspect the amount of disruption will be minimal.

Great forward planning Wightlink!!!!

Winter time table cuts, Lack of staff on crossings and now this.

If the link span was maintained properly in the first place this would not be a problem as it hasn't been in the past. another case of penny pinching on maintenance and putting your customer last.....but hey its not like we have a choice right!!! Wightlink just don't care about inconveniencing customers.as they have a monopoly and they know it.
