AN URGENT appeal has been issued to take 20 wild cats off death row.

Feline friend Nikki Hazelgrove, who has been called in to trap the cats at an Island farm, now needs homes for them.

This week she was forced to place an advertisement appealing for compassionate Islanders to come to the rescue.

Nikki, 57, from Nicholson Street, Parkhurst, founded Feline Welfare nearly 30 years ago and has since rescued hundreds of cats .

She was called into the farm because there was a need to cut the colony of feral cats, which had been used to keep the farm’s rodent population under control.

Nikki, who has been trapping the cats this week, said: "These are not cuddly, domestic, cats. Given time they could make household pets but they are probably more suited to a farm or to grounds where there is a need for pest control.

"I have been having them neutered and spayed in preparation for returning some to the farm or finding alternative homes elsewhere.

"I have not got the space for so many and, while the need for homes is immediate, any offers of assistance in the future would be greatly appreciated.

"I simply can’t contemplate mass destruction."
