Kenton are just one match short of returning to the First Division of the Middlesex Championship League at the first attempt after grabbing 20 points for the best end of the draw against mid-table Polytechnic on Saturday.

Currently joint top with Highgate, they should complete the job in their final league fixture of the season against already relegated Ruislip Manor this weekend and depending on Highgate's result could go up as champions or runners-up.

Kenton opened the batting and nearly came unstuck early on. They were in trouble at nine for two wickets. Then Danny Williams, 50, and Jamie Herd, 48, put on 105 for the third wicket and 59 not out from Sachim Patel helped them to an impressive 235 for seven at the close.

Then they just could not dispose of the last Polytechnic man and the side held on to finish on 141 fort nine.

Alex Singleton was the cream of the bowlers taking g five wickets for 67 runs off 126 overs.

"We are almost there," said Kenton skipper Rahul Kotecha, "but we don't know quite what to expect from Ruislip. As they are already down they could go for broke and give us a real run for our money or they might just have given up the ghost.

"It will be a very interesting fixture, but we'll be looking to be back where we belong."
