Junction improvement works started on the A316 at the Hospital Bridge roundabout on Monday.
The 16-week project will improve safety and prioritise bus routes. .
Roy Brunsden, the Highways Agency's project manager, said: "This junction has a poor accident record, in particular for cyclists."
He warned of slight delays due to off-peak lane closures. On weekdays the A316 will close eastbound from 9.30am to 4.30pm and westbound between 9am and 3.30pm while Hospital Bridge Road will shut in both directions from 9.30am to 3.30pm. All routes will be closed from 9.30am to 6pm on Saturdays.
