PRESSURE is mounting on the Isle of Wight Council for a Floating Bridge U-turn over its decision not to name the new vessel Floatie Mcfloatface.
The authority announced last week that it was inviting the public to help name the new Cowes floating bridge — but it was vetoing Floatie McFoatface.
The move however, prompted a social media outcry, including a petition started by Shanklin resident Martin Linnenbruger and signed by more than 1,200 in just three days calling for it to be named Floatie McFloatface.
The council has created a Facebook post for people to leave their suggestions, with the top six due to go forward to a public vote, with the winning name due to be chosen on April 21.
It is not the only suggestion to have prompted a petition however. Whippingham and Osborne councillor Julia Baker-Smith has created her own petition, calling for the vessel to be named after the Polish warship, the Blyskawica, which defended Cowes and East Cowes from a Luftwaffe raid in 1942.
That petition has been signed by five people since it was started yesterday (Monday).
