TWO men were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder yesterday after shots were heard on a High Wycombe street.

Residents alerted police on Sunday after the incident unfolded in Buckingham Drive, Micklefield, at 3.30pm.

Police say that one man was allegedly hit with a bat or wooden object before gunshots rang out.

A force spokesman said that a gun-wielding man then reportedly opened fire as he chased two others, one injured, down Buckingham Drive towards the Elim Pentecostal Church at the bottom of the road.

Police cordoned off the area and a helicopter was scrambled in the search for the men, but no one was traced.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said: "I heard all this shouting and commotion outside and saw a youngster run across my front garden. I went inside.

"Later I heard all the helicopters making noise up above and police sealed off the area.

"There were police all over the place until Monday."

Another resident said: "It's horrendous. I didn't hear the shots. The first I knew was a helicopter over my house just hovering there right above. Next police cordoned off the whole area.

"Nobody would tell us anything. I was afraid to go out."

Detective Inspector Philip Chandler, based at Amersham, said on Tuesday: "At this time no victims have come forward and we do not believe anyone was shot.

"The investigation is underway and we are keen to hear from anyone who heard anything, especially the man who was reportedly injured after being struck."

The incident happened just streets from where Junior Anthony Brown was shot dead outside his flat in Woodside Road in November 2000.

A 25-year-old man from High Wycombe and a 24-year-old from Southall, West London, were due to be transferred from Hounslow to High Wycombe Police Station yesterday evening in connection with Sunday's incident.
