Plan to tackle stigma of mental health

REDUCING the stigma associated with mental health is one of three key aims in a new plan released by the Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).

The draft proposal includes three priorities, in prevention and early intervention, a focus on recovery, and reducing the stigma and discrimination attached to mental health.

The plan will compliment the Island Health and Wellbeing Board's My Life a Full Life programme.

The Isle of Wight Mental Health Strategy 2014-2019 highlights the Isle of Wight has high proportions of elderly people and veterans, and consistently poor unemployment figures.

It goes on to say that people in these categories are most vulnerable to mental health problems.

The draft was published alongside a suicide prevention strategy, which indicated one in four people who committed suicide had been in contact with mental services in 12 months leading up to their death.

The CCG — a GP-led body responsible for commissioning health services — is welcoming comments. The strategy can be downloaded at www.isleofwightccg.nhs.uk/public-consultations.htm and comments may be sent to mhstrategy@iow.nhs.uk.
