The footbridge entrance to Twickenham train station may get a reprieve following a meeting between South West Trains and Richmond Council.

It is the latest twist in a row which began when South West Trains closed the bridge on a trial basis back in January.

In a statement made a fortnight ago Brian Cox Managing Director of the rail company said: "The installation of gates improves security by providing a visible staff presence at station entrances. But at some stations smaller entrances will be closed, unfortunately at Twickenham this includes the southern entrance footbridge. This is regrettable but we believe the short added distance to walk is a minor inconvenience."

But following a meeting with Richmond Council South West Trains now believe they have a solution that will please everyone. A spokesman for the company outlined the new proposal: "We still intend to install the automatic gates but man the bridge entrance and keep it open. This will cost us money but it shows the level of commitment we have towards our customers. The statement made by Mr Cox was made before the meeting with the council had taken place. We are still waiting to hear the council's reaction and cannot make any decision until then."

MP Vincent Cable said: "This is a very positive step forwards and just shows what a little bit of public pressure can achieve.''
