PROPOSALS for a new purpose-built primary school on the Isle of Wight are being recommended for approval.
Isle of Wight Council planners will consider an application to demolish the former Sandown CE Primary School in Grove Road and build a new Bay CE Primary School at their meeting next Tuesday.
The new building could accommodate up to 420 pupils and would be built on the existing playing field, allowing the majority of the school to continue to operate on the site during its construction.
Once complete, the old school would be demolished and a multi-use games area constructed on the site.
The ground floor of the two-storey building would house six classrooms, serving reception class and Years 1 and 2, along with the main hall, kitchens and reception.
There would be a further eight classrooms for Years 3 to 6 on the first floor, as well as an outside teaching terrace, learning resource centre and staff areas.
The proposals would see the main school pedestrian entrance repositioned from Grove Road to Winchester Park Road.
The plans, which are being recommended for conditional permission, have attracted 20 letters of objection as well as 17 in favour and a petition of support signed by 125 people.
