THE Golden Jubilee will be celebrated in Wooburn Green by the lighting of a ceremonial beacon.

Parish councillor Mike Appleyard (Wooburn Town Ward) said the exact details of the event were yet to be decided, but added that a barbecue and celebration could be on the cards.

Councillors also discussed the possibility of planting a row of trees that would come into bloom in June every year - the date of the official bank holiday this year.

The lighting of the beacon will form a part of a chain of such lights being lit across the country.

Cllr Appleyard added: "The parish council itself is going to light the beacon, but what we have to do is to wait until we are given the time we need to light it by the organisers.

"If it is early evening then we can organise a barbecue.

"We are really just waiting to find that out, and will then decide to have a full barbecue or just a few glasses of wine."

The placement of the beacon will take place on Sappers Field, where the extra height will enable it to be seen for miles around.

Mr Appleyard explained: "There was some discussion whether the beacon was put at the top of the hill in Sappers Field or at the bottom of the hill in Wooburn Park.

"What we will also consider is the row of trees. One suggestion for the trees was in the cemetery, but I personally think we should put them in a more public place."

Parish councillor Tim Pottage said he had detected a degree of antipathy towards the jubilee in the parish, and said he thought the celebrations should be limited to the lighting of the beacon.
