AN INVESTIGATION has been launched by Isle of Wight police after an assault on a 74-year-old man.
The assault took place at Newport Bus Station on Wednesday, January 2, between 5.45pm and 5.55pm, according to a police spokesman.
The victim suffered a very swollen hand, cuts to his nose and lip and he was left with very painful ribs and stiffness, after he was attacked by a group of youths.
Investigating officer PC Alan Spence said: "This is a rare assault which happened in a busy area of Newport during a period where numerous people would have been in Newport bus station and may have witnessed the incident."
Five people have been arrested in connection with the attack and bailed until January 28.
Police said anyone with information could contact Newport Police Station on 101,call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
